United States: Former president Trump is entangling himself on the topic of abortion as he attempts to navigate an issue that became a leading issue for Democrats and politically explosive for the GOP before November.
More about the news
Trump has been very insistent with Republicans to win elections regardless of having to tone down on issues such as abortion. However, his way of doing this risks repelling social conservatives without the benefit of winning over more moderate voters.
According to Chuck Coughlin, an Arizona-based GOP consultant, “The advice we’ve always given to clients on this issue is do not stand in the middle of the road because you’ll get hit by traffic going both ways,” the Hill reported.

Trump last week gave a battery of remarks on reproductive issues that were politically all over the place.
Trump opposes Florida’s ban on abortion
He opposed Florida’s ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, saying it was too restrictive, and, on social media, boasted about how his administration would be “great for women and their reproductive rights.”
He also said he would vote no on a referendum that could negate the Florida law and preserve abortion rights.
Trump also promised that the government would fully pay for all in vitro fertilization or IVF treatments if elected. This announcement is surprising to some in the party even as he boasted that he would end the landmark Roe v Wade decision of 1973 that has created this uncertainty around access to IVF, the Hill reported.
Lila Rose, an anti-abortion activist, has stated that Trump’s ideas on reproductive issues are inconsistent with how he behaved in the period before the first term.
Rose posed on X, “This has killed the enthusiasm of Trump’s own base,” where she urged Trump to change course and take advantage of the momentum among conservatives from his opposition to the Florida ballot measure.
