United States: The US East Coast should brace for another jarring weather change that will be rainy and windy and can even be hazardous, much in part to an atmospheric river and an emerging bomb cyclone.

More about the news

Rain with strong winds gusting from Tuesday night to Wednesday night is expected, and some places could be flooded, the meteorologists said.

Utilities were also preparing for possible loss of power due to winds, which may reach 60 mph (97 kph) per minute in some places.

An atmospheric river, which is a narrow stream of clouds extending from a warm tropical climate zone, is one of the factors that determines the weather, said Derek Schroeter from the National Weather Service based in Gray, Maine, AP News reported.

Key factors to drive the weather

The storm has the capability to draw moisture from the Atlantic Ocean to areas such as the US Southeast and places such as western Maine, where residents could experience freezing rain, downpours, warmer temperatures, and dangerous winds all in a day, Schroeter added.

According to him, “We’re looking at the risk of slick travel (Tuesday night) with the freezing rain,” “and we are going to be watching for the potential for flash flooding and sharp rises on streams as temperatures rise into the 50s (10-15 Celsius).”

The state was getting ready for a “multifaceted storm” in which they predicted two to three inches of rain would fall in some areas, said Schroeter.

The same was true within other regions on Tuesday night up to Wednesday night.

Forecasters also said that the storm had the potential of featuring a process referred to by meteorologists as bombogenesis- a “bomb cyclone.”

That is a quick deepening of a cyclone in a span of time, and it can result in severe rain precipitation, AP News reported.

Certain sections of the Northeast were already getting ready for poor weather. Across Maine, a few inches of snow prompted some schools to open hours late on Tuesday.

A flood watch for Vermont is from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
