United States: Women and men were moaning, crying, and praying desperately in the departures hall of an airport in the Southwestern part of South Korea on Monday as families who lost their beloved in a crash-landed passenger jet at the weekend waited for identification of their loved ones.

South Korea’s worst air crash in 30 years occurred in Muan County on Sunday when a Jeju Air plane crashed at the airport shortly after 9 am local time; 175 passengers and the six crew members flying on the plane meant for Seoul only two bounced back alive.

More about the news

To date, 146 identities of the deceased are known, an additional 33 are still unidentified, and attempts are being made to identify the remains by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Officials are striving to find out what led to the crash of Jeju Air flight 7C 2216 that was en route from Bangkok to Muan, CNN reported.

The South Korean authorities said on Monday that the pilot of the crashed airliner had reported that the flight had had a bird strike before he performed a risky low-altitude emergency landing.

Moreover, as Kang Jung-hyun, a senior official at the transport ministry, stated, “The pilot reported an emergency declaration and go-around due to a bird strike.”

The pilot did mention “mayday, mayday, mayday” three times while using the terms “bird strike” and “go-around,” the official said.

Such erroneous broadcasts occurred on South Korean television last night when the footage of the crash on Sunday shown by several news outlets revealed that one could not see either the back or front landing gear.

Police released footage of the scene and part of the flight where the plane – a Boeing 737-800 – slid on its belly at high speed, hit an earthen embankment, and became engulfed in flames.

In a statement to CNN, other aviation specialists said that the undercarriage of the plane, which includes the wheels used during the take-off and landing of the plane, did not look to have been fully expanded.

But why this failure to deploy, which sources said is almost unheard of, happened is still unknown.

The main investigator of the transport ministry said that two boxes- flight data and the voice recorder had been extracted from the wreckage.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is coordinating the investigation with its South Korean counterpart, with help from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
