United States: Heavy lake effect showers could bring several inches, possibly even feet of wet snow, to parts of Western New York and across the Tug Hill plateau today through Sunday, courtesy of the National Weather Service or NWS.

More about the news

For most communities in Central New York, including Syracuse, this morning’s forecast indicates that depths of less than an inch or two are expected over the weekend.

But for the regions stretching south of Buffalo to the Pennsylvania state line and in the areas around Watertown, the winds and colder temperatures may stir up the Great Lakes snow and pack so much that travel becomes risky and impassable, this service states.

What is more in the weather forecast?

In affected areas, this is likely to start snow from today (Friday) and be worse come Saturday and Sunday, syracuse.com reported.

This system still poses a problem in forecasting, as the weather service would want or need it to do.

That means that as of 5 a.m. on Friday, the amounts of snowfall expected to befall certain areas were in wide ranges.

These forecasts are from today through early Monday:

    • Dunkirk could get 29 to 47 inches
    • Jamestown could get 9 to 17 inches
    • Pulaski could get 8 to 16 inches
    • Lowville could get 11 to 21 inches

Moreover, Watertown could receive between 49 and 64 inches – five feet and one inch – by Monday.

The snow is expected to produce low visibility and risky driving on some sections of the state Thruway and Interstate 81.

Furthermore, these are lake effect snow warnings, expanded in several of the New York counties through Monday morning, including:

    • Allegany
    • Cattaraugus
    • Chautauqua
    • Erie, southern portions
    • Jefferson
    • Lewis
    • Oswego
    • Wyoming

    Warning of lesser visibility

That warning is an indication of a rough road accompanied by dangerous terrains. Sometimes, heavy snow is registered in the band form. If traveling, either on land or water, expect the roads or waters to be constantly changing and visibility to be a problem, syracuse.com reported.

Currently, the weather service predicts that anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of snow will fall in Orchard Park. Another 8 to 12 inches of snow may occur on Saturday.
