United States: One person is dead, and another is missing: large waves struck the coast of California on Monday during a high surf warning.

First responders services were dispatched to a man buried alive in Sunset State Beach, a state park in Watsonville, on Monday, CBS News and SF Gate reported.

More about the news

The man was rescued and taken to the hospital, where he later died, as it was reported.

Approximately thirty minutes south at Marina State Beach, Marina police and fire personnel reported a water rescue at around noon on Monday; further details were provided in a statement from the Marina Police Department.

According to police, the initial reports reflected that an adult male had been “overcome by high surf and pulled into the water,” USA Today reported.

Eyewitnesses tried to save a man; they were unable to pull the man from the water because of giant waves and a powerful undertow, according to police

What more were the officials reported?

The police of Marina stressed that the missing person was searched using the maximum level of effort available, including the Coast Guard and the California Highway Patrol Air Unit; however, the individual still remained missing.

Part of the pier at Santa Cruz fell into the Pacific Ocean on Monday as high surf hit the three city workers into the water.

Some of them are located at The Wharf, a public pier of restaurants located 70 miles south of San Francisco in Santa Cruz.

All public access to the pier was restricted, and all emergency personnel were removed from the pier shortly after 1 p.m.

Two of the three cities lost were saved by lifeguards while the third rescued themselves, as reported by The Salinas Californian, a USA TODAY Network.

Workers demolishing the restaurant were those from the city contracted to build structures on the Wharf, and the restaurant was partly wrecked in December by storm surge before the collapse.

The area of the pier that was lost is crumbling, and it was accessible and closed to the public in the aftermath of previous storms. No members of the public were on the pier at the time of the collapse.
