More about the news

Sebastian Zapeta, 33, was taken by ICE to Guatemala on June 7, 2018, reentered the United States through an unknown date and place, and arrived in New York City, an ICE spokesman, Jeff Carter, said.

Zapeta now stands accused of murder in the first and second degrees and arson in a case that brings back attention to safety in the subway, immigrants without legal documents, and helping the troubled subway system, gothamist.com reported.

Police have not recognized the woman who lost her life in the attack. The police officers urged that they were yet to decide whether she was really sleeping in the subway and if the woman was homeless or not.

Authorities said a man set a woman on fire around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the Stillwell Avenue station.

Her attacker supposedly used a lighter to set her outfit on fire, and the flames rapidly began to engulf the subway car.

As much as officers and an MTA employee tried to put out the fire, the woman was confirmed dead on the scene.

The NYPD Commissioner said three “high-school-aged” students identified the man in the images that the police shared in the aftermath of the attack, gothamist.com reported.

Police and other enforcement agencies stated that Zapata was in possession of a lighter at the time of his arrest.
