United States: Former President Donald Trump stated on Friday that if elected, he would seek to negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting his positive relationship with Vladimir Putin, even while standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump and Zelensky met in New York, providing the Ukrainian leader an opportunity to make a personal appeal to the GOP presidential nominee, who has expressed skepticism about ongoing US security aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

The tension between the two, both of whom have been critical of one another leading up to the meeting, was evident during a pre-meeting Q&A with reporters.

According to Trump, while talking to reporters before his meeting with Zelensky, “We have a very good relationship, and I also have a very good relationship, as you know, with President Putin. And I think if we win, we’re going to get it resolved very quickly,” CNN reported.

“I hope we have more good relations between us,” Zelensky added.

Trump said, “Oh, I see,” and “It takes two to tango, you know, and we will – we’re going to have a good meeting today. And I think the fact that we’re even together today is a very good sign.”

Crucial timing of the meet

The timing of the meeting is crucial for Zelensky, as he aims to persuade the Biden administration that Ukraine can still achieve victory in the war, provided that the US and other nations significantly increase military support.

Trump has frequently voiced his discontent with US funding for Ukraine, asserting that he could quickly bring an end to the conflict that began with Russia’s unprovoked invasion in February 2022, CNN reported.

Zelensky countered this week by stating that Trump does not understand how to resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Trump said regarding the race between him and VP Harris, “Hopefully, we’ll have a good victory because if the other side wins, I don’t think you’re going to have victories with anything, to be honest with you.”

Zelensky also expressed gratitude to Trump for meeting with him, noting that it had been five years since their last encounter, and he emphasized their shared belief that Putin must be stopped.
